I have bad breath, this will be my first time ever speaking about it.

I first realized I had bad breath when I was 10 years old, when my two best friends told me on the last day of school. I laughed it off with them, but in the inside it really hurt my feelings. From 10-13 years of age, I didn't let my bad breath faze me. I lived a completely normal life. I had lots of friends, sleepovers, and I did the typical that kids that age would do. I knew that I still had bad breath because sometimes my friends would rub their noses when I talked to them, but they never commented on it again.

When I got to high school things change. I didn't have any friends when I first started high school, because all of my friends went to a different school than I did. I made a few new friends, and there were times they'd tell me my breath stink. I became all of a sudden shy and quiet. From the 10th to 12th grade, I used to chew a lot of gum, throughout high school. Sometimes people at school I hung around would make fun of me about my bad breath, like joke around about it and say “why do you chew so much gum? It's not helping.” At the end of my 11th grade year I had to go to summer school, because I had failed a class. My mom made a dentist appointment a few days before I started summer school, and that's when I thought, “I have to speak up and tell the dentist about my problem”. I did. I told her that I had a bad taste in my mouth and that I have bad breath. She said that I had great oral hygiene, and told me to just brush my teeth twice a day, floss and scrap my tongue and that will help. I do that, but it never helps get rid of my bad breath. So since then, I've never said anything to my dentist about it again. Throughout the rest of high school, I just remained closed in and to myself. I would talk sometimes, but I'd always look down or put my hand by my mouth to talk. My cousins and older sister, throughout the years, have all commented on how bad my breath smells. The only person who never says anything is my little brother, who is 17 as of right now.

Now here I am 20 years old and is still dealing with it. It's like every year my social anxiety gets worse. I'm in college right now, and I'll be going into the nursing program next year. Which I am terrified about, because I know you have to talk, or you'll flunk out of nursing school. I don't know how I made it this far through college. When I have to give speeches and there are people in the front row I always look down and never really give eye contact because I know they'll smell my breath. Guys have tried asking me out plenty of times. One guy came up and said, hi and asked what name was. When I told him my name, he frowned and kinda put his hand by his nose, and said “oh my ride's here, I've gotta go”. Now whenever a guy talks to me, I just never talk. And they assume that I'm stuck up, but I'm not. I just don't want anyone to have to smell my breath, and judge me.

Later on today, I'm thinking about sitting down and talking to my brother about it. He's the person I'm closest to, and I know that he will understand. I've never told anyone about how I feel. My family has noticed that I've changed over the years. I never go to family gatherings anymore. Besides for school, I rarely leave the house unless I really have to. I don't have any friends anymore and now I have social anxiety. I can't sometimes even answer the door, because I know I'll have to speak. So, when people knock on the door, I run and hide. I hate shopping, because when I get to the register sometimes the cashier says, “Hi” and I don't speak, leaving the person to think that I'm rude. I never go out to eat, because I have to speak when the waiter is taking my order. I've never had a boyfriend, not once. My dad pressures me to get a job, but I'm afraid and embarrassed that while I'm being interviewed they'll smell my breath and not hire me. I hope that after I tell my brother he'll understand, I deal with this for the rest of my life. Bad breath has left me miserable and depressed, and has completely ruined my social life.

I know many people will want to use a commercial mouthwash as a halitosis  treatment. Surprisingly, most commercial mouthwashes may actually make your  breath smell even worse. This is because they contain alcohol which can cause  your mouth to dry up. You can make a mouthwash at home that would be a more  effective cure for bad breath. You can do this by pouring some salt into a glass  of warm water and gargling with this mixture.
